Juan Pablo Muñoz
Intern / Antifungal resistance
Biography
I was born and raised in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, the state known as the birthplace of mariachi and tequila. I’ve always been fascinated by science, from astronomy to genetics. I’m also really interested in how technology can be used to address challenges related to health, the environment, and food. That intersection led me to study Biotechnology Engineering at Tecnológico de Monterrey. I care about social impact and would like to eventually become an entrepreneur. That’s why, last year, I joined the Human Practices and Entrepreneurship teams of my campus’s iGEM project, which focused on developing a biosensor to detect emerging contaminants in water samples. This summer, I’m excited to be part of this amazing lab as an intern, contributing to the study of proteins involved in antifungal resistance.
Research Interests
I’m mainly interested in applying bioinformatics and machine learning to research that can positively impact human health. I’m especially fascinated by the relationship between microorganisms and health. Back in Mexico, I worked on evaluating the probiotic potential of lactic acid bacteria strains. Now, I’m studying fungal proteins (Erg3 and Erg6) and mutations associated with drug resistance.
