Anna Fijarczyk, PhD

Biography

I come from Łódź, a very nice city in central Poland. I studied biology in the University of Łódź, where I got my master’s degree in environmental biology (2008). For my PhD I moved to Jagiellonian University (Kraków, Poland), where I began to use population genetics to study speciation and hybridization in amphibians. I finished my thesis under supervision of prof. Jacek M. Szymura (2013) and then continued to work as a post-doc in the lab of Wiesław Babik (2016). In January 2017, I started my second post-doc in the lab of Christian Landry, where I’m currently studying evolution of pathogenic fungi causing Dutch Elm Disease, as a part of BioSAFE project supported by Genome Canada.

Research interests
 
I am interested in hybridization and the way it affects speciation, divergence and adaptation of populations from the genomic point of view. In the past years I have been particularly interested in adaptive introgression of immune genes between amphibian species, and the role of balancing selection in this process. Currently I am investigating hybridization in the context of rapid emergence of several lineages of tree-killing fungus causing deadly Dutch Elm Disease. My other areas of interest include evolution of genome size and gene repertoire of pathogens as a consequence of adaptation to hosts and vectors.

Biographie

Je viens de Łódź, une belle ville dans le centre de la Pologne. J’ai étudié la biologie à l’Université de Łódź, où j’ai obtenu ma maîtrise en Biologie Environnementale (2008). Pour mon doctorat je suis allée à l’Université Jagiellon de Cracovie, où j’ai commencé à utiliser la génétique des populations pour étudier la spéciation et l’hybridation chez les amphibiens. J’ai fini ma thèse sous la supervision du professeur Jacek M. Szymura (2013). J’ai ensuite continué de travailler comme postdoc dans le laboratoire de Wiesław Babik (2016). En janvier 2017, j’ai commencé un deuxième postdoc dans le laboratoire de Christian Landry, où j’étudie présentement l’évolution de champignons pathogènes causant la maladie hollandaise de l’orme, tout en faisant partie du projet BioSAFE financé par Génome Canada.

Intérêts de recherche

Je suis intéressée par l’hybridation et la manière dont elle affecte la spéciation, la divergence et l’adaptation des populations d’un point de vue génomique. Durant les années précédentes, j’ai été surtout intéressée par l’introgression adaptative de gènes d’immunité entre des espèces d’amphibiens, et par le rôle de la sélection balancée dans ce processus. Présentement, j’étudie l’hybridation dans le contexte de l’émergence rapide de certaines lignées de champignons pathogènes causant la maladie hollandaise de l’orme. Mes autres champs d’intérêt comprennent l’évolution de la taille du génome et du répertoire génique des pathogènes conséquemment à l’adaptation aux hôtes et aux vecteurs.
